Doon Defence Academy gives proper coaching for Deck Cadets. Deck cadets are learned to load ships, store cargo, handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear, and learns ship stability, ship maneuvering and ship management and perform a variety of operations and maintenance tasks to preserve the painted surface of the ship so as to maintain line and ship equipment. In short, a deck cadet performs all navigational and maintenance duties on a water based vessel under the supervision of a deck officer.

As part of the team servicing the day to day operations of the ship, Deck Cadets assist and understudy the ship’s Deck Officers in their duties. Deck Cadets enter into a training programme that lasts between 18 months and three years, major part of which will be spent onboard receiving structured training and building up experience.

Once you have qualified all of your classes, paid all your dues and spent your precious 3 years of training time aboard a ship, you can then apply to become an entry level seaman or officer. From there only, you can continue on and work your way up the career chain.
Nautical science refers to the basic knowledge which is required to safely navigate and operate a ship. The subjects include navigation and seamanship. Seamanship is the basic operation of shipboard equipment and tools.

The three year B.Sc Nautical Science is a course which is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, which falls under the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. The three year B.Sc course is residential.

The course is a three year course and the program is divided into six semester.

A candidate should pass 10+2 in the Science stream with Physics, Maths and Chemistry (PMC) and have obtained 60% of marks. He/She should have obtained a minimum of 50% of marks at 10th or 12th standard. The candidates should be between 17-25 years of age when the course start.

An entrance test is conducted which is followed by a psychometric test, medical examination, panel interview and pre-sea training.

One year pre-sea training course for graduate engineers (GME) is a course leading to class 4 marine engineer officer certificate of competency which is awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets, to become marine engineers on board merchant naval ships anywhere in the world.
